About The Charity - Sawyer's Light

History

Our son Sawyer was born with a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).

We spent 6 weeks at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, where Sawyer was born, had open heart surgery, and spent time recovering and healing.  We were extremely fortunate to have an immense support system of family and friends around us, as well as jobs that allowed us to pour our entire lives into Sawyer for that period of time.  It seemed the majority of people in similar situations were considerably less fortunate than us.

Before Sawyer was born, my wife Danielle and I had plans of creating a charity to support other families going through similar journeys with HLHS and other CHDs.  While Sawyer was with us, our other two children Annika and Noah used to sing “This Little Light of Mine” to him every time he made a peep. This inspired us to create “Sawyers Light” to carry the same message of hope, strength, and love that Sawyer brought to all of us in his short time here.

Our goal with Sawyer's Light is to provide support and encouragement to families going through the incredibly challenging experience of helping a child heal.  We have partnered with the Save A Heart program at Mott to help direct funds and resources from Sawyers Light to the families that are in need.
